    Sahib Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born to Mata Tripta and Mehta Kalu, the village accountant in the service of Rai Bular, who is remembered as one of Guru Ji's earliest admirers. Gurdwara Janam Asthan marks the birthplace.

    At the Pandha's schoolਪਾਂਧੇ ਦੀ ਪਾਠਸ਼ਾਲਾ ਵਿੱਚ

    Sent to the village teacher to learn letters and accounts, the young Guru Ji is said to have amazed the Pandha with an acrostic on the alphabet full of spiritual meaning. The Patti in Rag Asa in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is linked with this day. Gurdwara Patti Sahib marks the school.

    The janeu declinedਜਨੇਊ ਪਾਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਇਨਕਾਰ

    When the family priest, Pandit Hardyal, came to invest Guru Ji with the sacred thread, Guru Ji asked instead for a thread that could not break, get dirty, burn or be lost: one spun from compassion, contentment, continence and truth. The hymn is in Asa di Var (Ang 471).
    ਜਦੋਂ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਹਰਦਿਆਲ ਜਨੇਊ ਪਾਉਣ ਆਏ, ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਦਇਆ, ਸੰਤੋਖ, ਜਤ ਅਤੇ ਸਤ ਦਾ ਜਨੇਊ ਮੰਗਿਆ ਜੋ ਨਾ ਟੁੱਟੇ, ਨਾ ਮੈਲਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਨਾ ਸੜੇ। ਇਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਆਸਾ ਦੀ ਵਾਰ (ਅੰਗ 471) ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ।

    Sacha Sauda: the true bargainਸੱਚਾ ਸੌਦਾ

    Given twenty rupees by Mehta Kalu to strike a good bargain, Guru Ji met a band of hungry sadhus on the way and spent it all feeding them: the truest bargain there could be. It is often seen as a seed of the langar.

    Guru Ji married Mata Sulakhni Ji, daughter of Mul Chand Chona, at Batala. Gurdwara Kandh Sahib and Gurdwara Dehra Sahib remember the wedding, still marked each year with a fair.

    Bebe Nanaki Ji and the Modikhanaਬੇਬੇ ਨਾਨਕੀ ਜੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੋਦੀਖਾਨਾ

    At the invitation of their elder sister Bebe Nanaki and her husband Jai Ram, Guru Ji moved to Sultanpur Lodhi and kept the provision stores of Nawab Daulat Khan Lodhi, known for honest accounts and open-handed giving. Bebe Nanaki is remembered as the first to recognise who her brother was. Bhai Mardana joined Guru Ji here, and a sangat gathered for kirtan and shared meals.

    Sri Chand and Lakhmi Das are bornਸ੍ਰੀ ਚੰਦ ਅਤੇ ਲਖਮੀ ਦਾਸ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ

    Guru Ji's sons were born at Sultanpur Lodhi: Sri Chand in 1494, who later founded the Udasi order, and Lakhmi Das in 1497, who led a householder's life.

    Three days in the Vein riverਵੇਈਂ ਨਦੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਤਿੰਨ ਦਿਨ

    After the morning bath in the Vein (Kali Bein), Guru Ji disappeared for three days and was feared drowned. The Janam Sakhis and Bhai Gurdas describe a direct communion with the Divine and a call to teach. On returning, Guru Ji's first words were that there is no Hindu and no Musalman. Guru Ji was about thirty.

    Into Kashmir and the Himalaya, where tradition places Guru Ji's dialogue with the Siddhas on Sumer Parbat, and on to Ladakh and Sikkim. In 1518 Bebe Nanaki passed away at Sultanpur with Guru Ji beside her.

    Saidpur and Babarਸੈਦਪੁਰ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਬਰ

    When Babar's army stormed Saidpur (Eminabad), the town was put to the sword. The Janam Sakhis tell that Guru Ji and Bhai Mardana were taken prisoner and Guru Ji was set to turn a grindstone. Guru Ji's four Babarvani hymns in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji protest the suffering.
    ਬਾਬਰ ਦੀ ਫ਼ੌਜ ਨੇ ਸੈਦਪੁਰ (ਏਮਨਾਬਾਦ) ਉਜਾੜਿਆ। ਜਨਮ ਸਾਖੀਆਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਕੈਦ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਚੱਕੀ ਪੀਸਣ ਲਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ। ਬਾਬਰਵਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਇਸ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਦੇ ਗਵਾਹ ਹਨ।

    The travels ended with the founding of Kartarpur on the right bank of the Ravi. Guru Ji lived there as a householder and farmer with the family. Kirtan before dawn, honest work by day, evening prayer, and a langar where all sat together whatever their caste: the first Sikh community took shape here.

    At the Shivratri fair at Achal, Bhai Gurdas records, the Nath yogis asked Guru Ji why they had returned to household life. Guru Ji answered that the only miracle they held was the holy fellowship and the True Name. Siddh Gosht (Ang 938–946) is linked with such meetings.

    Multan: the jasmine on the milkਮੁਲਤਾਨ: ਦੁੱਧ ਉੱਤੇ ਚਮੇਲੀ ਦਾ ਫੁੱਲ

    From Achal Guru Ji went to Multan, a great Sufi centre. Bhai Gurdas tells that the pirs sent a bowl of milk filled to the brim, meaning the city had holy men enough. Guru Ji floated a jasmine petal on it: there was room without displacing anyone.

    Bhai Lehna comes to Kartarpurਭਾਈ ਲਹਿਣਾ ਜੀ ਕਰਤਾਰਪੁਰ ਆਏ

    Bhai Lehna of Khadur, a devotee of the goddess Durga, heard a hymn of Guru Ji sung by a Sikh and came to Kartarpur and stayed on there. The Janam Sakhis single out his humble, unquestioning seva.

    Bhai Lehna becomes Guru Angad Dev Jiਭਾਈ ਲਹਿਣਾ ਜੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਅੰਗਦ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਬਣੇ

    Passing over their own sons, Guru Ji named Bhai Lehna as successor, with the name Angad, 'of my own limb'. Bhai Gurdas and the bards Satta and Balwand describe the same light passing into a new body, the principle of all the Gurus who followed.

    Joti Jot at Kartarpurਕਰਤਾਰਪੁਰ ਵਿਖੇ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਉਣਾ

    Guru Ji merged with the Divine Light at Kartarpur. Tradition tells that Hindus wished to cremate and Muslims to bury, that each laid flowers, and that in the morning only the sheet and fresh flowers remained, so the sheet was divided between them. Guru Ji's ashes were later reinterred by Sri Chand at what became Dera Baba Nanak.

Why the Janam Sakhis differਜਨਮ ਸਾਖੀਆਂ ਵੱਖਰੀਆਂ ਕਿਉਂ ਹਨ

Most of what we know of Guru Ji's life comes from the Janam Sakhis: the Puratan, Miharban, Bala and later collections, written from the late 16th century onward. They differ from one another in order, dates and detail, and mix history with legend and teaching. The nearest witnesses are Guru Ji's own hymns in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and the first Vaar of Bhai Gurdas. So the dates here marked c. are approximate, the Udasis especially, and where the sources disagree this page says so.
