Before their long journeys Guru Nanak stayed with Bhai Lalo, a poor carpenter, instead of attending the feast of the rich official Malik Bhago. Called before Bhago, they squeezed Lalo's coarse bread, which ran with milk, and Bhago's rich food, which ran with blood: honest labour against wealth wrung from others.

The longest and most richly narrated journey ran from Punjab through the Hindu pilgrimage centres of the Gangetic plain to Bengal, Assam and Odisha, with Mardana singing to the rabab. Its themes are the critique of empty ritual (Haridwar, Kurukshetra, Gaya), the dignity of honest labour (Bhai Lalo), and the founding of sangats and dharamsalas wherever Guru Nanak went. The Encyclopaedia of Sikhism dates their visits to Dhaka, Sylhet and Chittagong to about 1507-08.

How we know — and what is uncertain
  • Most details of Guru Nanak's life come from the Janamsakhis (hagiographies written from the late 16th century onward: Puratan, Miharban, Bala, B40, Bhai Mani Singh), which differ from one another and mix history, legend and teaching. The Encyclopaedia of Sikhism itself says it is 'difficult to establish an exact itinerary'.
  • The earliest near-contemporary witnesses are Guru Nanak's own hymns in the Guru Granth Sahib and Bhai Gurdas's Vaar 1 (written about 60 years after their death).
  • 'historical' here means a visit or event supported by Guru Nanak's hymns, Bhai Gurdas or physical evidence and broadly accepted in mainstream Sikh scholarship. 'traditional' means it rests on Janamsakhi, gurdwara or local tradition.
  • Birth date: 15 April 1469 (Vaisakh) is favoured by modern research; the birthday is celebrated on Kartik Puranmashi. Death: Assu vadi 10, 1596 Bk, given by the Encyclopaedia of Sikhism as 7 September 1539, though 22 September 1539 is the date commonly cited today.

  • The figure of about 28,000 km on foot over about 24 years is widely repeated in Sikh popular and educational sources, but it is a modern approximation built from routes reconstructed out of the Janamsakhis, not a measured or documented distance. Other estimates differ: the Encyclopaedia of Sikhism and Britannica speak of about 20 years of travel, the BBC says 'nearly 30 years' starting in 1496, and some outlets give 30,000 miles or more. Present it as 'traditionally estimated at around 28,000 km'.

Start dates vary between sources (the BBC gives 1496; others give 1499 or c. 1500), and so do the lengths (about 20 to 30 years).

    Saidpur sacked by Babur: the Babarvani hymns

    Saidpur (Eminabad), Gujranwala, Pakistan

    When Babur's army stormed Saidpur, the town was put to the sword and its people carried off. The Janamsakhis say the Guru and Mardana were taken prisoner and the Guru was made to turn a grindstone, then released. Guru Nanak's four 'Babarvani' hymns (GGS pp. 360, 417-18, 722-23) protest the suffering: 'When there was such suffering, such killing... didst not Thou, O God, feel pity?' The hymns are historical; the imprisonment episode is traditional.

    Kartarpur (Ravi), Narowal district, Pakistan

    Guru Nanak's travels ended with the founding of Kartarpur on the right bank of the Ravi, on land given by a devotee (tradition names Ajitta Randhawa of Pakkhoke). Here they lived as a householder and farmer with their family for their last two decades. The first Sikh community (panth) took shape here: hymns before dawn, honest work by day, evening prayer, the sangat and the langar, where all sat together regardless of caste.

    Babur ransacked Lahore in 1524. A line of Guru Nanak's, 'For a pahar and a quarter the city of Lahore remained subject to death and fury' (GGS 1412), suggests they may have been there or nearby. The Encyclopaedia of Sikhism also links a Babarvani reference to guns against war-elephants with Panipat (1526).

    Guru Nanak went from Kartarpur to the Shivratri fair at Achal, where crowds flocked to them. Bhai Gurdas (Vaar 1.39-44) records how the Nath yogi Bhangar Nath asked why they had 'soured the milk' by returning to householder life. The Guru answered that the yogis begged at householders' doors, and that their only miracle was the holy fellowship and the True Name. Their long verse dialogue with the yogis, Siddh Gosht (GGS 938-946), is associated with such encounters.

    Multan, Pakistan

    From Achal, Guru Nanak travelled to Multan, a great centre of Sufi piety. According to Bhai Gurdas (Vaar 1.44), the local pirs sent them a bowl of milk full to the brim, meaning the city already had enough holy men. They floated a jasmine petal on it: there was room for them without displacing anyone. The Miharban Janamsakhi says Shaikh Bahauddin, a descendant of Bahauddin Zakariya, came to hear them.

Lehna (b. 1504), a Trehan Khatri and devotee of the goddess Durga, heard a hymn of Guru Nanak sung by a Sikh of Khadur. Joti Jot: passing at Kartarpur

    Kartarpur (Ravi), Pakistan

    Guru Nanak passed away at Kartarpur on Assu vadi 10, 1596 Bk. The Encyclopaedia of Sikhism converts this to 7 September 1539, while 22 September 1539 is the date most commonly cited and observed today. Tradition says Hindus wished to cremate Guru Ji and Muslims to bury them. Guru Ji asked each to lay flowers beside them, and whichever stayed fresh would decide; in the morning the body was gone, both sets of flowers were fresh, and the sheet was divided, one half cremated and one buried. The flower story is traditional. A samadh and a grave both stood at Kartarpur until floods took them; Guru Ji's ashes were reinterred by Sri Chand at what became Dera Baba Nanak.
