Sent to a village teacher (pandha) to learn letters and accounts, the young Nanak is said to have astonished the teacher by composing an acrostic on the alphabet with a deep spiritual meaning; the Patti in Rag Asa in the Guru Granth Sahib is associated with this episode. Guru Ji is also said to have studied Persian with a maulvi. Gurdwara Patti Sahib in Nankana Sahib marks the school site. The school-day dialogue is traditional (Janamsakhi); the acrostic composition itself is scriptural.
