According to the Bala Janamsakhi, their father gave them twenty rupees to strike a profitable bargain; on the way they met a band of hungry ascetics and spent all the money feeding them, calling it the truest bargain they could make. Gurdwara Sacha Sauda at Chuharkana commemorates the story. It is popularly seen as a seed of the langar, though the institution of the community kitchen took shape in the sangats and at Kartarpur later in their life.
