Dhan Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji is the first Sikh Guru. A Guru is a teacher who brings light where it is dark. Guru Ji was born in 1469 in a village called Talwandi, which today is called Nankana Sahib, in Punjab.
  1. Guru Ji’s mother was Mata Tripta Ji and their father was Mehta Kalu Ji. Their big sister, Bebe Nanaki Ji, loved them very much, and was the first to understand how special her little brother was.
  2. Even as a child, Guru Ji asked big questions and was kind to everyone. When they grew up, Guru Ji walked to faraway lands on long journeys called Udasis, with their friend Bhai Mardana, who played music on a stringed instrument called the rabab. Guru Ji sang songs of love for Waheguru, the one Creator of everyone.
  3. Guru Ji taught that we are all one family: boys and girls, rich and poor, people of every faith. Guru Ji’s words are kept in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, and in their last years Guru Ji lived as a farmer at Kartarpur, where everyone worked, prayed and ate together.

The True Bargain (Sacha Sauda)

When Guru Ji was a young man, Mehta Kalu Ji gave them twenty rupees and asked them to go to the market and make a good bargain. But Guru Ji said that feeding the hungry was the truest bargain of all.

In the town of Saidpur, Guru Ji stayed with Bhai Lalo, a poor carpenter who earned his bread by honest work. A rich man, Malik Bhago, threw a grand feast and was cross that Guru Ji did not come. Guru Ji took Bhai Lalo’s plain roti in one hand and Malik Bhago’s rich food in the other, and squeezed. From Bhai Lalo’s roti came milk; from Malik Bhago’s food came blood, because his riches came from hurting others. Malik Bhago was ashamed and promised to change.

On a hot day near Hasan Abdal, Bhai Mardana was very thirsty. On top of the hill lived Wali Kandhari, who had a spring of water. Three times Bhai Mardana climbed up to ask, and three times Wali Kandhari said no. Then Guru Ji moved a stone, and fresh water flowed at the bottom of the hill, while Wali Kandhari’s spring dried up. Angry, he rolled a huge rock down at Guru Ji. Guru Ji calmly raised a hand and the rock stopped. Tradition holds that the print of Guru Ji’s hand is still on that rock today.

    The Cup of Milk at Multan

When Guru Ji came to Multan, the holy men of the city sent them a cup filled with milk right to the brim. It was a polite message: our city is already full of holy people, and there is no room for one more. Guru Ji smiled and gently placed a small flower petal on top of the milk. It floated, and not one drop spilled. Tradition holds that this was Guru Ji’s gentle answer: like the petal, Guru Ji would take no one’s place and would rest lightly among them.
