Dhan Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji did not ask anyone to leave home, family or work to find the Divine. Their teaching is a way of living: remember the One who lives in everyone, earn honestly, share what you have, and treat every person as an equal. Guru Ji sang these teachings as Gurbani, and 974 of Their hymns are enshrined in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
This page walks through those teachings one by one: what each means, how it can be lived today, and a line of Gurbani for each, shown in Gurmukhi first with an English translation below. The translations are those of the sources named under each verse.

Painting of people, trees, birds, animals and a river, each carrying a small flame of the same light
Everything Guru Nanak Dev Ji taught grows from one root: there is one Creator, present in every being and every place, and no single religion owns that One. The symbol ੴ (Ik Onkar) joins the numeral “one” to “Onkar”, and it opens Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
The Mool Mantar, the opening lines of Japji Sahib, describes this One: True, the Creator, without fear and without hatred, timeless, beyond birth, self-existent, and known through the Guru’s grace. Because the same Light lives in everyone, this belief is the root of all Guru Ji’s teachings on equality.

What it means

Painting of Guru Nanak Dev Ji in meditation, eyes closed
Naam is the presence of the One in all creation. To “japo” is to remember it: through simran (quiet repetition and meditation), through reading and reflecting on Gurbani, and through kirtan, singing it with others. Guru Ji taught that lasting peace comes from this remembrance, not from ritual, pilgrimage or ceremony.
Remembrance is meant to fill ordinary life, not replace it. Guru Ji especially praised amrit vela, the quiet hours before dawn, for reflection. Remembering the One in all also loosens haumai, the ego that divides us from one another.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji weighing grain with the scales at the Modikhana in Sultanpur Lodhi
Paintings by Devender Singh and H. S. Naz, used with permission
Guru Nanak Dev Ji made earning a living by honest, hard work a spiritual duty. They rejected both exploitation and the idea that holy people should live off others’ charity. In one verse Guru Ji says that taking what rightfully belongs to another is as forbidden as pork to a Muslim or beef to a Hindu.
Work, family and service are not obstacles to the spiritual life but its proper setting. After Their travels, Guru Ji lived at Kartarpur for nearly two decades as a householder, farming Their own land.

What we earn honestly is not only ours. Vand Chhako means sharing it: with family, with the community and with anyone in need. Many Sikhs set aside a tenth of their income for others, a practice known as dasvandh that grew up after Guru Ji’s time.
The Janam Sakhis tell that young Nanak was given money to strike a good bargain and spent it feeding hungry holy men: the “true bargain” (sacha sauda) remembered at Gurdwara Sacha Sauda. Guru Ji’s line on Ang 1245 joins this pillar to the last: one who works and gives some of it away knows the Path.

If the same Light lives in all, no birth makes anyone higher or lower. Guru Ji asked people to recognise that Light in everyone instead of asking about their caste, and called pride in social status empty.
In a society that often treated women as impure or lesser, Guru Ji asked plainly why woman should be called bad, when it is from her that kings are born. At Kartarpur, women and men sat as equals in the sangat and the langar.

Seva is selfless service, done without wanting credit or reward. Sangat is the company of people who gather to remember the One; Guru Ji describes true sangat as the place where the Name of the One is spoken. Langar is the free kitchen where everyone sits together in pangat, in rows, and eats the same food whoever they are.
Together they turn the teachings into practice: equality is hard to preach to someone you have just served and eaten beside. The langar at Kartarpur is the root of the langars that today feed many thousands every day.
