The Sufi Hamza Ghaus was fasting forty days to call down destruction on the town over one man's broken promise. The Guru sent Mardana to buy a farthing's worth of truth and of falsehood; only the shopkeeper Mula answered, 'Death is true, life is false.' That answer calmed the faqir, and Mula joined the Guru on their way to Kashmir.
